The THAAD missile system is capable of shooting down a ballistic missile both inside and just outside the atmosphere. It uses hit-to-kill technology whereby kinetic energy destroys the incoming warhead and is highly effective against offensive ballistic missile threats. By intercepting an incoming missile at a high-altitude, the THAAD missile system mitigates effects of enemy weapons of mass destruction before they reach the ground.

The THAAD launcher is the heart of a THAAD missile battery. Each launcher is capable of carrying eight defensive anti-ballistic intercept missiles. Multiple launchers can be linked together via an external fire control command and control node to plan and execute intercept solutions for multiple incoming missiles.  The THAAD system is designed, built, and integrated by Lockheed Martin.
